The town of silver

Built on silver, decorated in bone.

In the Middle Ages the mines under Kutná Hora made it the second town of Bohemia after Prague. Its royal mint, the Italian Court, struck the Prague groschen, and its miners paid for St Barbara's Cathedral, begun in 1388 and finished only in 1905.

At Sedlec, on the edge of town, the small Cemetery Church of All Saints holds the bones of between 40,000 and 70,000 people. In 1870 the woodcarver František Rint arranged them into pyramids, garlands and a great chandelier. Since 1995 the town centre, St Barbara and the Sedlec cathedral have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What a fabulous trip visiting some spectacular and interesting sites, with St Barbara's Church being a standout. The story of Kutna Hora in itself is worth hearing about. We also enjoyed a very nice lunch.

The guide

Kutná Hora, explained

A chapel of bones, a cathedral paid for by miners and a quiet old town: one easy day from Prague.

Why people go

Most come for the ossuary. It is small, darker than you expect and very still, and the skulls hang in garlands from the vault above you. Nobody forgets the chandelier. Then the town surprises them: after the crowds of Prague, Kutná Hora is calm, with long lanes of old houses and a cathedral that would be famous anywhere.

St Barbara is the second reason. Its three tent-shaped spires and flying buttresses rise above a slope of vineyards, and inside the miners and minters of the town painted their own chapels.

Which tour

For a first visit, the guided trip by train is our pick: a guide from Prague's main station, the train and local bus, and both entries in the price. The coach tour covers the same two sights for less. With a family or a small group, the small-group day adds hotel pickup, the Sedlec cathedral and a long lunch.

Good to know: the ossuary sells its tickets for a fixed time and the capacity is limited, so book ahead in summer. Tours that include entry hold the slot for you, and every tour here cancels free up to 24 hours before.

Make a day of it

Behind St Barbara, the Jesuit College and Barborská street lead back into town past a row of Baroque saints. The Italian Court, the old royal mint, is a few minutes further, and at Hrádek the silver museum takes you down into a medieval mine.

A church under repair

The ossuary has been under restoration since 2014. The building had leaned almost half a metre and the lower chapel was damp, so the parish is working in phases until at least 2030 and keeps it open throughout.
